Moving to the Gold Coast from Canberra in 2001 was a bit overwhelming for me. Coming from a colder environment, I hadn’t experienced the popularity of tanning before.
Being very fair with freckles, I tried everything I could to get a natural gorgeous tan like the majority of the Gold Coast. Sun baking on the beach an tanning beds were unsuccessful, my skin just could not tan naturally!
Experimenting with tanning creams and mousses left me with some horrendous results. From the dreaded bright orange hands (after using a self tanning cream) to streaky legs and dark patchy knees. Let’s just say I can understand why some people have reservations about sunless tanning.
Soon after the discovery of spray tanning, I quickly became obsessed. Being in grade 12 and having no transportation to and from the salon, I decided it would be easier if I saved up some money and invested in a spray tan machine. I began to study the best airbrush tan techniques and completed an in-depth Spray Tanning Course. Soon enough I was practising on my friends and sisters, it wasn’t long until I had friends of friends coming to see me. I began to get an excellent reputation and saw an opportunity to turn what started out as a hobby into a business.
Most tanning salons go through staff very quickly and it makes you wonder how experienced the girls they have hired to tan their clients are. I have been to salons and left with a dripping wet tan and patchy legs. I have also been many shades of orange and will never trust another spray tan technician to do my tan again!
I graduated from high school in 2005 and have over 4 and 1/2 years experience in airbrush tanning. I relied on word of mouth customers for a few years and started Gold Coast Spray Tans in 2007.
What my clients love about the mobile service is how much easier it is to have a tan from the privacy and comfort of their own home. If you have ever been to a salon for a spray tan then perhaps you can relate. Customers are expected to be dressed and out the door just minutes after their tan has been applied. This often results in their clothes rubbing and streaking the tan. It’s incredibly convenient to be able to relax at home after your spray tan instead of rushing to get dressed, struggling to put on your seatbelt without destroying your tan and attempting to drive home.
One question I am always asked is “How Are You Different From Other Spray Tan Businesses?”
As I previously mentioned, I have had over four and a half years experience. There are very few other spray tan technicians on the Gold Coast with this level of experience under their belt. I believe I have an advantage over my competition because unlike others, I have tried and tested over 11 different tanning solutions.
I know the difference between the solutions that turn orange and the ones that do not. I can also list the solutions that fade evenly and the solutions that come off patchy.
Other tanning companies will switch from one solution to the next and not inform their clients. When I trial a new solution I always test it on myself first. I will never experiment on a client.
I no longer reveal the name of the tanning solution that I use on my clients. Others may try to compete with my spray tans but I know that my solution and technique cannot be beaten.
